About 25,000 PERM labors were approved in 2007 for Indian nationals. Assuming a 2.5:1 ratio of 'GC filed:Labor approved', implies that each year 62,500 GC are demanded by Indians under EB. Since only 10,000 are available (across all EB classes), this implies each year a backlog of 50,000 cases is created for Indians.
Since PD are essentially retrogressed from Nov. 2005, we can assume that since then another 100,000 Indians have joined the GC backlog. It can also be assumed that between 2001 and Nov. 2005 there must be another (atleast) 50,000 waiting for GC.
Assuming these numbers are correct, a person filing for labor today is looking to wait for atleast 15 years before getting a GC (150,000/10,000).
As for those wth PD prior to Nov. 2005 - well..... probably anywhere between 1 to 5 years .....

Darrell Issa of California introduced H.R.43 to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to eliminate the diversity immigrant program and to re-allocate those visas (50,000) to certain employment-based immigrants who obtain an advanced degree in the United States. The bill has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee, which will be chaired by Rep. Larmar Smith of Texas. House Immigration Subcommittee will be chaired by Rep. Steve King of Iowa. Hopefully you get a different officer. In my case they officer stamped I-551 on passport which was valid for six months for travel purpose and 1 year for employment.

"The spouse and children of a person who has previously immigrated to the U.S. may be entitled to obtain an immigrant visa at a later date. I have been in USA Since 2003.
I started the GC process in 2004, started the process again, recaptured old PD. Was hoping to get GC this year when my PD was current for 2 months. Hope will get it this year.
After moving I saw lots of engineer,mostly software, seemed happy with jobs. Started doing some search and found that this is one of the least stressful jobs in US with great salary and growth potential. Thanks for the views guys, would like to know if can do MS with a bachelors in non engineering field.

can i get a h1 done from a desi employer just to protect the h4 status and join the other company thats offering me a job with my ead.
the h1 from the desi employer will not be having pay stubs but thats only to get h1 status.
As Kaiserose pointed out the H1 quota is done for the year and will not open till April next year and start in Oct 2009 . Considering that you do get an H1 for your wife next year , make sure that she is working coz while applying for her I-485 they might ask for W2's and paystubs for her ( an H1 person cannot be without pay for such an extended period of time ).
Going on F1 is a good idea but I think for that you have to go back to your home country and get it stamped and come back ( can someone confirm this ?? ). This new regulation was put in place due to the security measures after 2001 . But best confirm with your lawyer.

I don't understand why people are right now so worried about priority date retrogression. If you have passed 180 days after I140 approval, go ahead, change your job and incase your 485 gets denied, reapply with new employer, with new new job description, using old PD and get GC soon as your priority date will be current. Am I missing something?
There is no way I am going to spend 6-7 years in the same job with the same title(maybe even same company).

Its just scary that after all these years they might consider the case abandoned if you don't receive the damn FP letter. Some guys didn't even get the receipts yet. I feel for those...
P.S.: Anybody got the case closed because they missed the FP appointment ? Is there a way to reopen it ?

You are not alone.
We have the same problem.
EAD applied in July 07, EAD card received in Oct 07 and the card was made expired 01/01/07 by WAC.
Called USCIS hotline, tried new applications with WAC, TSC and Info pass, still waiting if WAC is going to correct its own mess.
Big headache.

What are you saying? Health Services dismal? I thought it was better than US in many aspects. The cost is cheap for treatment (unless you have some uncommon disease. Since the system is churning up so many doctors, there is a lot of competition. Even in small villages you will find many doctors competing for patients. Maybe that is not true for everywhere, but that is what I have seen in my home state Haryana.
Also the education system may not be perfect, but kids don't have to go to private schools, because public schools have run out of capacity. There are problems like not all-around development, and not all kids doing great in studies. But that is true even in US, unless you are sending your kids to a fine private school (which by the way you can do in India, if you have money). JMHO

The main reason was because of the huge current account deficit and negative savings (mainly federal deficit) which is a threat to the US competitiveness. China moved down due to corruption etc. India moved up but any further movement will depend on structural reforms, especially controlling the huge public service and red-tape and a creaking infrastructure - power, roads, ports, water supply - all of which are run by the government. The health services in large parts of India is dismal and so is the public education system (K-12). With the left firmly controlling the ruling party, deregulation is slow and insipid, and it is the private sector which is basically contributing to the GDP and Competitiveness.
